You could always upsize the hole and new rivets.

I would imagine that it's too smooshed to push it back out, especially without wallering out the hole. Yes, I'm coming at it from the side and cutting it off. Got it down to about a rivet every two seconds but that was mostly the pop rivets.

It took me some trial and error and having to resharpen my chisel several times (and bought a second air chisel so I could do one with a point, and one with a cutter) until I got it to strip out the inside of my bus. If you're struggling, you may be doing it wrong. I have seen Chuck Cassady with Chrome Yellow do it with a chisel. I've seen Wes with Transcend Existence use a drill and he did it pretty quickly with a single larger drill bit. I have found they can be chiseled from the inside and then popped out with a punch, if you chisel the mashed part off of the back, or they can be chiseled from the outside which is a bit more violent and may need some repair with a plenishing hammer to flatten the sheet metal back out. But I've chiseled some (haven't fully begun my roof raise yet). Thanks everyone.īlind pop rivets can be easily removed by punching the center in (with a pointed chisel or hammer and punch) and then cutting them off with a sharpened chisel.ĭome rivets can be drilled which is slow. Is there any reason this wouldn’t work for the exterior? I need to reuse the rivet holes for the skins and I don’t mind drilling them for that, but drilling ALL the way through EVERY solid rivet is not going to be feasible.

I removed the interior ones by grinding a notch with the cutting wheel and shearing it off with an air chisel. I cannot do that for every single one (around 700 total. Drilling the smallest hole through them took 6 minutes even with cutting oil and a brand new bit. They are not the center punch kind like were on the interior.

But for RIGHT NOW I need input on how to best remove the exterior rivets because holy crap it’s not gonna be feasible to drill them all like that. I’m using 1/4 rivets all around for the skinning. I’ve been told by others that the best way to remove the rivets on the exterior is to drill through them with progressively larger cobalt drill bit sizes.
